Learning and Homework

  • The CVCS library contains a wealth of resources for parents and students to use; most can be borrowed to take home. This includes curriculum books for all our grades, which are published by the Core Knowledge Foundation. Parents may borrow these for the duration of the school year.
  • Free online dictionaries/thesauruses: Merriam-Webster, Wiktionary, and the numerous English-to-non-English dictionaries at freedict.com.
  • Free online encyclopedias: Wikipedia (a fascinating project in itself as well as a vast resource) and Microsoft Encarta. Wikipedia also links to several other "commons" knowledge resource projects such as Wikispecies (a directory of life), Wikiquote, and Wikisource (a free library).
  • Free online help with math.
  • The CVCS portal to Stanford's Education Program for Gifted Youth program (requires a username and password that students in the EPGY math section receive from their teacher).
  • Google Earth is a free program that allows you to zoom in on any part of the earth through high-resolution satellite imagery. The latest version also lets you view the stars and planets, with zoom, time-animation, and images from the Hubble Space Telescope.
The program needs to be installed on your computer, so be sure to check with your parents first. You can download it here. There is also a Google Mars viewer which does not require any software installation.
  • The West Point Bridge Designer is another free program that lets you build a "virtual" bridge and then test it to see how well it works. It is very easy to use, and a lot of fun. You can even enter the contest if you like! Download the software here.
