Governing Council election results are in: Richard Sonnenfeld and Kate Burleigh will be the new parent members. Jim Shepherd is our community representative.
Please remember to fill out the Quality of Education survey and return it to the office by the end of this week.
There is a Facilities Committee meeting on Monday, May 9, tentatively scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the school. The committee intends to finalize the decision on planning proposals and the summer schedule.
In addition to the meeting agenda, Tracey Hamilton (tonight's chair) provided two forms for parents to fill out: preferences for PA meeting day/time, and suggestions on what they would like to hear about from CVCS classes.
Francie Deters noted that early results from last month's parent questionnaire indicate major concerns are communication and bullying. She clarified that this questionnaire comes from the CVCS Governing Council, and is used by the Council as a guide to improve the school. The current, very brief, survey that is due back at the end of this week comes from the Socorro school district board and is distributed to all parents/guardians of children in district schools. A few questions at the end are added by our school administration. The responses to this survey are used in part to assess the school's performance, so it is vital to get as many as possible returned. Ruth Milner commented that it might be useful to include this clarifying information when the surveys go out next year, so that parents understand the uses and importance of each one, and also asked whether a summary/brief analysis of the Governing Council's questionnaire results could be made available to put on the school Web site (and possibly on bulletin boards as well if it can't be completed in time to send a handout home before school ends). Results from the district survey will not be available for some time, and will be published in the local paper.
School events are a great way for parents to help make our school a great place to be a student or staff member.
Student Council's Spring Fling is coming up this Saturday, May 7, from 5-8pm. The Parent Association will have an information table, and will also sell school T-shirts at a special price of $5. Ruth and Tracey will each take a turn at the table; we will need a few other people to do a half-hour or so. The Student Council will be looking for some volunteers to help with setup starting at 4pm. They are also asking parents to please donate goods for the bake sale and cakes for their cakewalk.
The "Dads' Lunch" sponsored by Maternal/Child Health, NM GRADS, and the Socorro Boys and Girls Club will be held at CVCS starting at noon on Wednesday, May 18. All families will be invited, but the focus will be on celebrating fathers and their importance in their children's lives. It will also honor single mothers, who must play a dual parenting role. This is an event they have held at other area schools with good success. CVCS will adjust the students' lunch schedule that day so that everyone eats at the same time. The organizers will provide hot dogs, plates, etc. but are looking for donations of salad or fruit as well as setup help beginning around 11am that day. Please help out if you can.
End-of-year Teachers' Breakfast: The teachers have asked that this be held on Friday, May 27, i.e. the day after school finishes. This is an in-service day for them, and it will allow them to take advantage of the buffet without being restricted by class schedules. We need volunteers to help plan and organize, and also to bring hotplates/steam tables/electric pans and food items (e.g. muffins, fruit, bagels, etc.; Tracey will donate eggs). There are about 20 teachers and staff members who will be on hand to partake, so quantities of two dozen should work well.
Francie suggested that a fun thing to do next year would be to have a potluck lunch on early-release days. Next year these will be on Wednesdays instead of Fridays, and CVCS will not have quite as many as the district elementary schools.
Some PA organizational meetings will be held during the summer, dates/times TBA. The more people participate, the better our Parent Association will become.
