MAY 23, 2001
- Family Picnic. It's time for fun! On Saturday, June 2nd
at 3:00, Cottonwood Valley families will unwind, play, eat, and
get to know each other at Sedillo Park. Please bring your favorite
dish and a drink to share; we'll bring plates, forks and napkins.
- Facilities. The City Council approved our zoning request
for using the old hospital site. A big thank you to the many parents
who either attended the meeting or wrote letters. The facilities
committee is now working hard to order the buildings and prepare
the site. We could use your help. Please consider participating
on the Facilities Committee. We need help coordinating the many
things that must be done in preparation of our buildings, and
will need help beautifying the site. Contact Mary Dwyer at 838-0914
if you are interested.
- Staffing. The Teacher Search Committee continues to
review applications and interview qualified candidates. We have
received applications from teachers in Socorro as well as all
over the country. No recommendations have been made to the Council
yet, but the Committee expects to make recommendations within
the next few weeks. The Administrator Search Committee has completed
interviewing three candidates. Some of you parents had the opportunity
to meet two candidates. The third candidate will be in Socorro
on Monday, May 28th for a tour of Socorro and a pot-luck dinner.
The dinner will be at the home of Cheryl Passalaqua, 1212 South
Drive. All parents are encouraged to attend and meet the candidate.
The Committee will make its recommendation to the Council at its
May 29th meeting.
- CALENDAR After hearing feedback from the parents, the
Governing Council decided to change Cottonwood Valley's calendar
to coincide with the District's. The revised calendar will be
mailed to parents over the summer.
- GOVERNING COUNCIL. The next Governing Council meeting
will be on Tuesday, May 29th at 7:00 at the Socorro Public Library.
Hope to see you there!
- HELP WANTED. There are SO MANY ways parents can help
build the school; without your help, it won't happen. Please consider
serving on the many committees that have been formed: facilities,
special education, gifted, curriculum, special events are a few.
You don't have to be an "expert" in any of these areas; you just
have to be willing to give a little time. Here are a few other
areas we currently need help with: Hot lunch program. If you have
any experience with the hot lunch program (or are willing to learn),
please consider this. We need someone who will learn about the
program requirements, then obtain price information from area
caterers. Summer Core Knowledge coordinator. This would entail
acting as a liaison between CVCS and the Core Knowledge Foundation,
which could include arranging training dates, obtaining information
on ordering materials, and keeping the Foundation informed of
our progress.
- Newsletter. If you enjoy writing, we could use your talent.
This would require someone who can get information from the Governing
Council, put together the bi-weekly newsletter, have copies made,
then mail or e-mail them to the parents and other interested persons.
- Recruiting. We are recruiting students now and will continue
to do so over the summer. We need people who will distribute CVCS
enrollment forms and other recruitment materials to area businesses,
offices and daycare centers. We also need someone who will run
ads in the newspaper or Channel 12.
- Classroom supplies. We will begin ordering the many things
we need for the school over the summer, including desks, chalk
boards, chairs, etc. We need parents to do the shopping and make
recommendations to the Governing Council. A perfect opportunity
for you shop-a-holics!
- Clerical duties. We will not be able to hire an office
manager until later in the summer, but will need someone to help
with clerical tasks. This could be having copies made, purchasing
supplies, making telephone calls, mailing packets to parents,
etc. If you have a particular area of expertise or are just willing
to help in any way, please give us a call. Remember, there will
be no school in August without parent participation. There is
simply too much work to be done for a small group of people. If
you are able to help, please contact Cheryl at 835-0370. Don't
forget the family picnic on Saturday, June 2nd at Sedillo Park!
We'll see you then.
