May 2008
- Tuesday, May 7: Usborne Book Fair continues until 11:30 a.m.
- Tuesday, May 6: Several events are
planned for this evening:
- Usborne Book Fair starts at 10:00 a.m. and runs until 8:00 p.m.
- Ice Cream Social 6:00 - 6:30 p.m.
- Kindergarten Open House 6:00 - 7:00 p.m.
- The CVCS Business Manager, Mary Cox, will lead a
public review of the 2008-2009 budget starting at
6:30 p.m.
- EPGY Math training session from 6:30 - 7:00 p.m., for
parents whose child is
doing EPGY and would like to continue it over the summer
from home.
- We will also reschedule the regular monthly Parent
Association meeting to follow the budget review.
- Tuesday, May 6: CVCS Governing Council
Elections. For more information, and candidates'
campaign statements, please see the

All CVCS parents and Socorro County registered voters may
vote. Please come to the school on May 6 between 7:45 a.m.
and 7:00 p.m. to cast

April 2008
- April 25: [NOTE CHANGE IN DATE]
CVCS Spring Fling, 5:30-8:30 p.m.!
This year's spring fling will include a potluck, games, and a
Variety Revue featuring
the talents of many CVCS students! Auditions will be held in
the music room at 3:00 pm on Wednesday, April 16. Everyone is
welcome at this fun event! Please bring food to share.
- April 25: CVCS has adopted the riverine parks along the
Rio Grande! Students and staff will be working with the Forest
Service and other agencies this morning to clean up the parks.
If you can come along to help with this community service
project, that would be greatly appreciated! Mark your calendar
and let your child's teacher know if you can partipate. Thank you!
- April 22: Deadline to submit your Letter of Intent to run
for a Governing Council position.
- The enrollment lottery for new students for 2008-2009 will
be held on Friday, April 18, 2008, at 3:00 p.m. in the CVCS
office. If you have a prospective kindergartner who is a
sibling of a currently-enrolled CVCS student, you must
enter the new student in this lottery to ensure a position in
the fall. For more information, please see the

- April 11: Spring photo day, including class photos. Class
photos must be paid for in advance; please return the Lifetouch
envelope with payment to your child's teacher or the office.
- April 11: Dental Day with Dr. Oates. Please return the
dental-exam permission form to the school if you would like
to have your child's teeth checked.
- April 9: Re-enrollment forms for current students who plan
to attend CVCS next year are due by today.
- Congratulations to Anjik Ghosh (6th
grade) and Nico Seamons (7th grade)! At the New
Mexico State Science Fair on April 5th, Anjik placed first in
the Junior Engineering category, while Nico took second in
Junior Energy & Transportation. Well done!
March 2008
- March 10-14: New Mexico Standards and Benchmarks Assessments
(standardized testing) in grades 3-8 this week. Please make sure
your child gets plenty of sleep, a good breakfast, and arrives
at school on time. Thank you!
- March 10: "Intent to Re-Enroll" forms for 2008-2009 will
be sent home with students this week. To ensure your child's
place at CVCS next year, the form must be returned to the
school by April 9.
February 2008
- February 25: Please sign up with Jill if you are interested
in the Battle of the Books competition, which will be held in
Las Cruces on April 19. This is a great way to enjoy more reading!
- February 23: Our Science Olympiad team came sixth overall
(out of 25 middle-school teams) at the state competition. Well
done, team!
- February 4: CVCS received a $1,000 grant from Wal-mart!
It was a surprise gift and is greatly appreciated. The money
will be used to buy two laptop computers for classroom use.
- February 2: Congratulations to our Science Olympiad team,
who took first place in the regional competition in Silver
City. Good luck at the state event on February 23!
January 2008
- January 26: The CVCS fundraising luncheon at RioFest raised
over $600 toward construction of a bus shelter at the school.
Many thanks to patrons and to those who donated food, facilities,
and/or their time to make this such a success!
- January 25: County Spelling Bee. Congratulations to the CVCS
classroom spelling bee winners who will be going on to the
county competition: Jenna Melanson (4th), Rose Kerkmans (5th),
Anjik Ghosh (6th), Willie Schaffer (7th), and Angelina
Stanzione (8th).
- January 19: The CVCS Student Council is organizing a Winter
Dance for Grades 5-8, to be held at the Socorro Disabled Veterans
building on
Saturday, January 19 from 6:00-9:00 p.m. If you can help as a
chaperone or by contributing food or drinks, please contact
Ms. Lindquist, Mrs. Ware, or a Student Council member. Thank you!
- January 16: Most Parent/Teacher conferences will be scheduled
for today. Please contact Jill if you can't make the time assigned
to you. Art, Music, PE, and Special Ed teachers will be available
for drop-in visits from 5:00-6:00 p.m., and all middle school
teachers will be available for drop-in visits from 4:30-6:00 p.m.
- January 11: Congratulations to GeoBee winners Anjik
Ghosh (1st), Will
Benson (2nd), and Malcolm Ruff (3rd)! Anjik will now continue
to the next level of the GeoBee competition process.
- Welcome to Ms. Erin Pillman, our new Spanish teacher!
Elementary students will have Spanish class four days a week
for 25-30 minutes each; in middle school Spanish will be
an elective.
- Starting this month, CVCS will follow the same early-release
schedule as district elementary schools. The main reasons for
the change are difficulties with the bus schedule on these days,
and to provide common planning time for the teachers.
December 2007
- December 13: The CVCS Annual Winter
Performance will be held at Macey Center starting at 6:30
p.m. Mrs. Dennis and all CVCS classes are working hard
to prepare for the show - including our (in)famous version of
The Twelve Days
of Christmas. Bring your friends and family - everyone is invited!
November 2007
- November 20: Congratulations to the CVCS Declamation winners, who will
go on to the District Declamation:

- The annual CVCS Fall Festival
will be held on Sunday, November 4 from noon to 3 p.m.
Please come to enjoy the great food, fun games, and camaraderie!
As in past years, there will be an ethnic food bar, live
entertainment, and a pie-eating contest. As this is not a
fundraiser, we greatly appreciate all the food and time donations
that help to make a successful event. To volunteer, please
return the form in the weekly newsletter, or sign up on one of
the lists in the office. Thank you!
October 2007
- October 29: See the CVCS BEST Robotics Team in
action! View this video
of the team building their robot. The video was created by
their coach and mentor, Mr. Creighton Edington.
- October 27: The CVCS BEST Robotics team will compete
in the statewide contest, starting at 9:00am at Holloman
Air Force Base in Alamogordo. The team, coached by Mr. Creighton
Edington, has been preparing since early September. Come support
them while they direct their robot to retrieve objects on a
simulated Martian surface! You can also enjoy the Holloman
Air Show and the X-Prize Cup events being held that weekend.

- October 3: Thanks to all the parents who came to our annual
Open House, brought food for the potluck, or bought
books at the Scholastic Book Fair. Your support really
helps to make our school great!
- October 3: International Walk & Roll to
School Day! All 100 prizes were handed out to walkers,
bikers, skaters, etc. in the morning! Our afternoon Bike Rodeo
enticed 51 bicycle riders to stay after school. Everyone
had lots of fun competing in various events while practising
important skills like steering and braking. Well Done!
Thanks to our sponsors (Manzanares Street Coffee House,
Spoke-N-Word Cycles, Video Shack, Randy's Ace Hardware, First
State Bank, and Supermart) and to everyone who participated
or helped out —
you made it a terrific success!
September 2007
- Sept. 4: Hot lunch is now being served at CVCS, in the new
portable. The school district will supply food according to
their published menu. Jill will bill parents periodically
(unless you have returned the form to show that you qualify
for free lunches).
- Sept. 1: Join us at the County Fair parade. Meet between
Parkview school and Sedillo Park at 9 a.m. Ride a bike or
scooter, walk, or push a stroller. Show your school spirit
and decorate your bikes or make a flag to wave!
August 2007
- August 31: Photo day! All students' picture money must be
turned in to Jill before photos are taken. Students will
have a free-dress day, but must follow the basic guidelines
stated in the handbook.
- August 15: School starts.

Policy that takes effect for this school year.
- August 7: Our annual family
potluck will be held at 6:00 pm at CVCS. Please
bring a dish to share. Come and meet the new teachers and
visit with old friends. Also, if your children have outgrown
school clothes that are still in good shape, please bring them
for a clothing exchange. Supplies are limited, so it will be
on a first-come-first-served basis.
- If you haven't signed up for Smith's Earn & Learn program, please
do it soon! A percentage of your shopping spending is donated
by Smith's, at no cost to you. Our school has received more
than $15,000 in past years, which was spent on library books,
field trips, etc. You can sign up at the store or
by
email. Thank you for shopping at Smith's!
- Please save all your Boxtops For Education, empty printer
toner cartridges, and soup labels for our school. These turn
into real money. You can send them with your child to the
office. Thank you!
