May 2005

  • May 27: Post-end-of-school Teachers' Breakfast, organized by the CVCS Parent Association. Please help with supplies, food, or service to show our teachers and staff how much we appreciate them!
  • May 26: Last day of school!
  • May 25: Eighth grade graduation ceremony at CVCS.
  • May 24: Kindergarten promotion ceremony at CVCS.
  • May 13: CVCS 2005-2006 lottery.
  • May 12: District-wide Kindergarten spelling bee, 9:00 a.m. at the district's Central Office.
  • May 7: The student council's annual Spring Fling will be held at CVCS today, 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Please join us, and sign up for the Spring Fling Talent Show in the office!
  • May 6: Forms to re-enroll current CVCS students for 2005-2006 are due at the office. You must return this form to assure your child's place in next year's class.
  • May 4: The 2005 election results are in! Congratulations to new CVCS Governing Council members Kate Burleigh, Jim Shepherd, and Richard Sonnenfeld. And a big thank you to the other parents who ran for the open positions, and to everyone who voted in the election.
  • May 3: Governing Council election. Voting will be held at CVCS from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

April 2005

  • April 29: Mrs. Brennan and Mr. Stokes have organized a District Water Festival at Clarke Field for all area fourth-grade classes to learn about water issues through hands-on activities.
  • April 20: CVCS Annual Open House and Usborne Book Fair! Please join us at CVCS, 5:30-7:00p.m.
  • April 15: Congratulations to Campbell Galon for getting 2nd place at the district 1st-3rd spelling bee!
  • April 15: The holiday originally scheduled for today has been cancelled in order to make up the day lost due to the emergency closure after last October's hailstorm. There is school on April 15!
  • April 12: Photo day (class pictures).
  • April 8: Free public "Scrap Arts Music" performance, 1:00 p.m. at Macey Center. Since this is an early-release day, school will be dismissed at 12:15 p.m.
  • April 8: CVCS parent surveys due. Please help improve our school by completing and returning the survey!
  • April 1: The early-release day originally scheduled for April 1 has been moved to April 8.

March 2005

  • March 22: Storyteller Brenda Pickett will visit CVCS.
  • New Mexico state Standards-Based Assessment testing will be conducted in grades 3-8 during the first two weeks of March. It is especially important during this period that the students involved get lots of sleep and arrive at school on time.

February 2005

  • CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR SCIENCE OLYMPIAD TEAM AND COACHES!! The 15-member CVCS team, led by Mr. Mayfield, placed third in the state competition on February 26th - an outstanding performance, and a great reward for all the hard work they've put into this since early January. WAY TO GO, TEAM!
  • February 14: Charter School Day in Santa Fe. Parents are invited to join us in this opportunity to demonstrate our success and for attending students to learn about New Mexico's government. Please contact Shawn Price or Jill Urban for more info.
  • February 11: County Spelling Bee.
  • February 4-5: Science Olympiad regionals in Silver City.

January 2005

  • January 24: Zoo-to-You comes to CVCS (K, 1, 4, 5)
  • January 20-21: Poetry Alive, culminating with a performance at Macey Center on Friday evening at 7:00 pm. Adults $10, children under 18 free. For more information call 838-2026. Tickets available at the Macey box office or at CVCS.
  • January 19: There will be a parent tour of the old hospital building on Wednesday, January 19. Meet at 3:15pm at the school, and bring a flashlight. The Facilities Committee will meet that evening at 7pm in the multi-purpose room.
  • Please remember to re-register for Smith's Earn & Learn! This is an important source of funding for our school, and there is no cost to you; Smith's donates a portion of what you spend when you shop there. Re-registration is needed each school year for us to continue receiving these donations. Thank you!
  • All-color yearbooks are available from Jill in the office, for just $12 each. Don't miss out on school memories! No extra books will be ordered, so if you want one, be sure to get yours early. Yearbooks will be delivered in May.
  • Welcome back Mr. Price! Mr. Price has been gone for two years, working at Kirtland AFB in Albuquerque, and is now back at CVCS. He will be teaching several subjects in middle school.
  • Students who eat hot lunch will be bussed to San Miguel for lunch for the rest of the school year, due to construction work at Zimmerly. Please remember that on early- release days there is no lunch period at CVCS; students may bring a small snack if necessary.
  • Ms. Lindquist is offering tutoring to all age groups Tuesday-Friday from 3pm-4pm, in all subjects. For more information, please call Jill at 838-2026.

December 2004

  • December 20-31: Winter break! Classes resume on Tuesday, January 4, 2005 (Monday January 3rd is an in-service day for teachers only).
  • December 15: CVCS holiday performance at the Garcia Opera House, 7:00 p.m. Please come see all our classes perform!
  • December 9: There will be a CVCS Parent Meeting at 5:30 p.m. in the CVCS multi-purpose room. WE NEED YOU! Please come and help make our school a terrific place.
  • December 8: Band Concert, Sarracino Middle School auditorium, 7:00 p.m. Everyone is invited!
  • December 2: Congratulations to Sam Mozley, a CVCS second grader, who won first place in the Socorro County Declamation. Way to go, Sam!

November 2004

  • November 19: To Macey for performance of Alleycats, 10:00 a.m.
  • November 16: Grades K-3 will go to Macey Center at 10:00 a.m. for a performance of Dynorock.
  • November 8-9: CVCS will hold its annual Declamation Contest. Times will be announced. The Declamation is open to all students in K-5th grade competing in serious or humorous prose or poetry. Contact your child's teacher for more information. The District Declamation will be held on November 11th and 12th.
  • November 6: CVCS Fall Festival! 11 a.m.- 2 p.m. Volunteers are needed for crafts, cooking food, decorations, setup and clean up. The new event this year is the Casserole Cookoff, so pull out Grandma's prize-winning recipe and come on over! Prizes will be awarded for Best in Show, Tastiest, and Most Exotic Combination. All festival attendees will be judges. To volunteer or obtain more information, please call the office at 828-2026 or contact the festival co-ordinators, Pete and Jen Whiteis. Please bring one can of food per person, to be donated to our local food bank, as the price of admission.
  • November 4: National Dance Institute performance at Macey. Enjoy a first-class dance show with local talent (including CVCS students) showing their skills! Thursday night, 7:00 p.m. at Macey Center. This high-energy show is a yearly event featuring youth from the Socorro area. Tickets are available at the office and are $6.00 for adults; children are free. Don't miss this fabulous event!

October 2004

  • October 29: Photo re-take day.
  • October 28 & 29: Early release days for parent-teacher first-quarter afternoon conferences.
  • October 20: Grades K, 1, & 3 will go to the Albuquerque Zoo.
  • October 17: The Accountability and Advisory Committee will meet at 11:00 a.m. in the CVCS multipurpose room to review and complete the Education Plan for Student Success, and to discuss the future goals and objectives for charter renewal. Please join us.
  • October 13: Grades 2 & 3 will go to Sevilleta Wildlife Refuge to observe pond life.
  • CANCELLED DUE TO HAILSTORM.October 5: CVCS school-wide Open House 6:30-7:30 p.m. Please come and see what our school is all about, and the many classroom and library improvements that our staff and volunteers have made!
  • October 4-8: Scholastic Book Fair at CVCS all week

September 2004

  • September 29: Storyteller Dana Newman will visit CVCS
  • September 17: Grades 4, 5, and 6 will go to Macey Center to see the dance troupe "Frula" perform at 9:30 a.m.
  • September 16: 4th grade Open House 6-7pm
  • September 13: Congratulations to Kate Burleigh's art students! Third grade won Best in Show at the Socorro County Fair for their watercolor flower display; first and fourth grades were awarded first place with "Klee Faces" in the Pictograph category, fifth grade received second place in 3-D, kindergarten placed second with their bird drawings, and second grade came in second for their pictures. An excellent job was done by all, and a variety of the art can be viewed in the office.
    Congratulations also go to Jan Thomas and Peter Mozley, parents of Sam and Willie, who were awarded the Keep New Mexico Beautiful Award for their outstanding work landscaping and caring for the grounds at CVCS! Our thanks go to them, and we hope they enjoy the award luncheon in Albuquerque on October 16.
    Thanks also to Buster Marshall, mother of Cody, who has been working tirelessly in the school library for the past year. Our library would not be the comfortable, organized room that it is without her help.
  • September 13: Mr. Stokes and Mrs. Brennan are looking for parent volunteers to help with the district-wide Water Festival. Please contact the office if you can help. Thank you.

August 2004

  • School resumes on Monday, August 16. Welcome to 2004-2005!
  • A family potluck will be held Thursday, August 12 at 6:00 pm at the park just south of Macey Auditorium. Please bring chairs and a dish to share with six people. Come and meet the new teachers and visit with old friends.
  • The new class teachers this year are Ms Karen Bailey-Bowman (3rd grade), Ms Rebecca Madrid (4th grade and Special Ed), and fifth grade. Mr Stokes will be teaching PE and 4th grade.
  • Please save all your boxtops for education and soup labels for our school! The boxtops turn into real money and are found on many items! You can send them with your child to the office. Thank you!
  • If you haven't signed up for Smiths Earn & Learn program, please do it soon! A percentage of your shopping spending is donated by Smith's, at no cost to you. Our school received over $2000 last year, which was spent on library books, field trips, etc. Thank you for shopping at Smiths!
  • Students will be walking to Zimmerley for lunch again this year. If you would like your child to have a hot lunch you do not need to send any lunch money. Lunches will be billled to your child's account. Walkers will leave for Zimmerely at 10:45 and return at 11:00, while students remaining at CVCS will eat from 11:00 to 11:30

 

  • Cottonwood Valley Charter School has created a National Wildlife Federation Schoolyard Habitat site. In our garden we’ve stressed the importance of using native and drought-tolerant plants in this arid region. Not only does the garden provide a valuable learning opportunity, but we will be doing our local wildlife a favor too.
