May 2004

  • Last day of school is Thursday, May 27! Report cards will be handed out that day except to students who still have library books out, or who owe money to CVCS or to Zimmerly for the hot lunch program. Please check your account at the school.
  • 8th Grade Graduation Ceremony will be held at CVCS Wednesday, May 26 at 7:00 p.m., immediately following the evening concert. Congratulations to our very first graduating class!
  • CVCS Music Concerts will be held at the school on Wednesday, May 26, at 1:00p.m. and again at 6:00p.m. Participating students must arrive for evening concert warm-up by 5:30p.m. sharp!
  • Grades 3-5 will have science day on May 21. K-2 will also hold a "science buffet" on that day.
  • Grades 1-5 will have a pool party at the NM Tech Swim Center Thursday May 21. They will leave CVCS at 12:00p.m., walk to the pool, and return at 2:00p.m. All participating students must bring swimsuit, towel, sunscreen, water bottle, hat, and sunglasses. Parents are welcome to join us. If you have any questions, please contact the PE teacher, Christine Hicklin, at the school (838-2026).
  • Reminder: early-release day on Friday, May 14.
  • Stanford-9 tests will be given during the week of May 10.
  • The CVCS Spring Festival is Saturday, May 8 at 6:00-9:30p.m. As your admission "fee", please bring a can of food per person (donation to our local food bank) and one pot-luck food item per family. The fun includes:
    • Pot-luck supper
    • Socorro music groups
    • Dancing
    • Water balloons
    • Lemonade stand
    • Raffle. Prizes include a lovely large doll handmade by CVCS teacher Mrs. Susan Brennan. If you would like to donate a prize to benefit CVCS, please call the office at 838-2026.
  • The 2004-2005 student lottery will be held on May 7 at 3:00 p.m. Parents of prospective new students must complete an Intent to Enroll Form to enter your child in this lottery.
  • The district Kindergarten spelling bee will be held May 6 at the central district office.
  • The wolf sanctuary will bring a wolf for K-4 to learn about on Wednesday, May 5 at 12:00 noon.
  • Current students who will be returning for 2004-2005 must re-enroll by May 5. For re-enrollment forms, please contact Jill at 838-2026.
  • Governing Council Election is May 4. Voting is open to all school parents as well as all registered voters in Socorro county. Poll times are from 8:00am-7:00pm.

April 2004

  • CVCS Open House will be Tuesday, April 27, from 5:30-7:00 p.m. Please join us for this terrific chance to meet teachers, talk to other parents and students, and see what CVCS is all about.
  • The Usborne Book Fair will be held Tuesday, April 27, from 9:00-4:00 and during the Open House, continuing Wednesday, April 28, from 9:00-3:00. Please take this opportunity to purchase some excellent children's books at great prices, while also raising money for the school.
  • The CVCS 2002-2003 standard testing report is now available as a printable flyer. It works best with two-sided printing, but you can also just print this PDF file, attach the two sheets with their blank sides back-to-back, and fold in half.

February 2004

  • Congratulations to Jay Majumdar, a CVCS eighth-grader, who won the Socorro County spelling bee for the second year in a row!
  • Congratulations to the CVCS Science Olympiad team and their coach, Mr. Edington! They competed in the regional tournament in Silver City on February 7, and came fourth in their division. In addition, they won the Spirit Award for enthusiasm and outstanding conduct. Now the team is getting ready for the NM state Science Olympiad, which will be held at NM Tech's Macey Center on February 21. Good luck, team!
  • The CVCS school library has many great books, with a huge shipment expected on Monday Feb. 23rd. Stop by any time and check some out. If you are looking for something in particular, just ask school librarian and secretary Jill Urban.
  • February 18th is Dental Day at Dr. Oates' clinic across the street. Permission slips will be sent home the week before.
  • Susan Martinez will hold a class for teachers and interested parents on the Inclusion Classroom on Friday, Feb. 13, 1-3p.m.
  • Charter School Day at the NM Legislature! Classes from 4th, 7th and 8th grades, along with the Student Council representatives from grades 5-8, will go on a bus to the Roundhouse in Santa Fe on Monday, Feb. 9. Student Council members will act as pages for Rep. Don Tripp, and all students will take a tour of the legislature. Students must be at CVCS by 6:15a.m. The bus will return to CVCS at 5:00pm. Bring a water bottle and sack lunch. Parent volunteers are needed; please contact your child's teacher if you are interested. Permission slips must be signed.
  • Class spelling bees are being held in early February, in preparation for the county spelling bee on Friday Feb. 13th at 9:00a.m. More information is available from your child's teacher.

January 2004

  • Welcome to our new teachers:
    • Ms. Alex Rykken, art and fine arts
    • Mr. Rodney Mayfield, middle school science
  • CVCS Geography Bee: 3rd place Nikki Engler, 2nd place Og McCord, winner Isaac Burleigh. Congratulations all of you!
  • PLEASE NOTE: There will be no school bus service on the first day back (Monday, January 5, 2004) as the other district schools return the following day.

December 2003

  • Friday, December 19, is the last day of school before the winter break, and is an early-release day.
  • The CVCS Christmas Concert will be held at Finley Gym on Wednesday, December 17, at 6:30 p.m. Students performing should arrive at 6:00 p.m. Update: here are some photos of kindergarten, third grade, and sixth grade students performing.
  • Willie Mozley in CVCS' 5th-grade class won the Socorro County Declamation Contest. Congratulations Willie!

November 2003

  • The Young Explorers will hike on the sand dunes north of Sevilleta on Saturday, November 22. For details, please see the Young Explorers Home Page
  • 5th and 6th graders at CVCS are participating in the National Dance Institute. Performances will be held on November 13 at Macey Center.
  • The annual CVCS Fall Festival will be held on Saturday, November 8, from 11:00a.m. to 2:00p.m. Besides being great fun for the whole family, this event is also a fundraiser for the Student Council. Please come and join us!

October 2003

  • The Young Explorers will have their first outing of the school year, Sunday, October 12, to the Manzano Hawk Watch Observation site. For details see the Young Explorers Home Page
  • CVCS Open House will be Tuesday, October 7, from 5:00-6:30p.m. The Scholastic Book Fair will be on at CVCS all that week, October 6-10. Please come by and check out the many excellent books for sale at excellent prices. CVCS will receive a percentage of the proceeds to put toward books for the school, so besides getting great books yourself, you will also be helping to improve our library.
  • Picture re-takes Monday, October 6. Please return prints from the first session to Jill before then.

September 2003

  • Parent-teacher conferences will be held Tuesday September 23 and Wednesday September 24, after school. Please contact Jill in the office to schedule your appointment.

August 2003

  • The first day of school is Tuesday, August 19.
  • A family potluck will be held Thursday, August 14 at 5.30 pm at the park just south of Macey Auditorium. Please bring chairs and a dish to share with six people. Come and meet the new teachers and visit with old friends.
  • The new class teachers this year are Ms Sunny Baer (3rd grade), Mr Jim Stokes (4th grade), and Creighton Edington (Middle school science and history). We also have new teachers for Spanish, PE, and Art.
  • This year the school year will be extended to 3.00pm. Please call Annabelle with the district if you have questions about buses.
  • Please save all your boxtops for education and soup labels for our school! The boxtops turn into real money and are found on many items! You can send them with your child to the office. Thank you!
  • If you haven't signed up for Smiths Earn & Learn program, please do it soon! Our school received over $2000 last year from smiths last year which was spent on library books, field trips, and overhead projectors. Thank you for shopping at Smiths!
  • We will be serving free breakfast at the picnic tables each morning beginning at 8:00am.
  • We need your trash! Our kindergarten class needs old uniforms, hats, fancy dresses, and purses for a dress-up box. All classes need various supplies like paper tubes from paper towel rolls, toilet paper rolls or wrapping paper, Old magazines, plastic containers (sour cream, butter, etc) with lids, clean tuna cans, foam trays from meat, buttons, felt pieces, and aluminum pie tins. Thank you for thinking of CVCS!
  • I would like to compile an e-mail list to send parents notes that I usually send home with the students but often don't make it into their parent's hands… please complete the bottom portion of this note and return it to me in the office the first week of school.
  • Student pictures will be taken on Friday August 29. Makeup pictures will be taken in October.
  • Immunizations: All kindergartners and 7th graders need the HepB series. If you child has not had the chicken pox immunization, we will need a written statement from you stating that your child has had chicken pox and when he/she had it. Please contact your physican and make sure your child's immunizations are up-to-date.
  • Students will be walking to Zimmerley for lunch again this year. If you would like your child to have a hot lunch you do not need to send any lunch money. Lunches will be billled to your child's account. Walkers will leave for Zimmerely at 10:45 and return at 11:00, while students remaining at CVCS will eat from 11:00 to 11:30

 

  • Cottonwood Valley Charter School has created a National Wildlife Federation Schoolyard Habitat site. In our garden we’ve stressed the importance of using native and drought-tolerant plants in this arid region. Not only does the garden provide a valuable learning opportunity, but we will be doing our local wildlife a favor too.
