SITE PLANNING REPORT 2006/06/15

In the fall of 2005, RTI/EDI of Albuquerque were hired to gather facilities requirements from parents, students, staff, and the local community, and to distill all of this information into a detailed report and site plan. The final report and associated materials are below. Sizes are shown for the larger files.

Your comments and ideas are important, and are always welcomed by the chair of the Facilities Committee.

Design History

On Tuesday, October 11, 2005, RTI/EDI led the final public meeting of the planning stage. This took the form of a workshop (a charette) to pull together the requirements and ideas into a functional design. Three potential designs emerged:

  1. Demolish the old hospital building and create a new facility
  2. Preserve as much as possible of the old building, particularly the front facade (although it would be greatly modified in appearance)
  3. Combine option 2 with additional buildings behind it as in option 1

RTI/EDI distilled several discussions into a list of pros and cons. Rough cost estimates were obtained to aid in the decision, and in November of 2005, the committee voted to recommend that the old building be demolished. This recommendation was approved by the Governing Council at its meeting that month. Following a bidding process in March 2006, demolition was carried out over the summer.

Other Meeting Information

  • Notes from the teacher/staff and student sessions of the planning meeting held on September 14, 2005. Nearly all CVCS employees and about fifteen students attended this meeting, with the goal of developing detailed requirements based on day-to-day activities at the school. Students' ideas are also summarized in a wishlist matrix.
  • Detailed notes from the first public meeting, Thursday September 1, 2005. About 50 people attended, including parents, teachers, staff, students, and Socorro residents.
