Contents

School Hours: Monday to Friday 8:15 a.m. through 2:55 p.m. A teacher is on duty at 7:40 a.m. to supervise children. A teacher will also be on after-school bus duty each day until the last bus arrives, and at the pick-up area on West Place until 3:10 p.m.

Business Office: The business manager, Mary Cox, is in the office from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The administrative assistant/librarian, Jill Urban, is in her office in the library from 7:45 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Administrator: Karin Williams is the school's administrator. She is the educational leader of the school, and manages the educational administrative aspects of the school including evaluating teachers and disciplinary issues.

Enrollment (including transfers): Cottonwood Valley charter school is a tuition-free public school and is open to all. Initial enrollment is determined by lottery and space availability. For information on enrollment, please see the Enrollment page. Please contact the office regarding transfers from other local schools partway through the year.

Meals:

  • Free breakfast of cereal and milk is available to all CVCS students.
  • Please note that sodas are not permitted at CVCS. If your child brings soda, it will be held in the office until school is released for the day. New health guidelines have been enacted by the New Mexico Public Education Department, and CVCS strives to reinforce healthy food consumption by all students.
  • All students will eat lunch between 10:55 and 11:30 a.m.
    • Weather permitting, all students may eat outside at picnic tables under the shade structure. In cold or inclement weather, they will eat in the multipurpose room of our new building. CVCS will provide milk at lunch to any CVCS student who wants it.
    • Children eating hot lunch: Full lunch price is $2.00 per day; reduced price is $0.40. Eligibility for free or reduced-price lunches is determined through Peggy Lopez at the school district office. CVCS sends bills out at irregular intervals, and you can call the school to find out your child's current balance. Please deliver payments to the CVCS office; checks should be made out to CVCS. Payment in advance is greatly appreciated! Menus for district hot lunches are available online and are printed in the Cottonwood Valley Weekly newsletter.
  • Some classroom teachers request snacks from each student for the class. Please consult your child's teacher for more information.

Spanish Program: K-5 students receive Spanish every day for 30 minutes. 6th grade will receive 1 hour 3 times a week; the other 2 days will be 30 minutes. A sequential program is used through the different grade levels. Multicultural education is also an integral part of our bilingual program.

Volunteers: Parent involvement and volunteering is vital to the success of our children and our school, and is an important goal in our charter. We encourage parents to take an active part in the education of their children. Please remember to:

  • Check in at the office. Please stop in at the office to sign in. This is for the safety of your children.
  • Obey school rules. Each family should have a copy of the student handbook. There you will find the discipline policy, which includes the dress policy. We ask that all volunteers follow the same rules as the children.
  • Respect the teacher's wishes. Please work with your child's teacher in the classroom and respect the fact that the teacher is a trained professional. The teachers are available to discuss your children from 8:00 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. and briefly after school.
  • Record your volunteer hours. Whenever you contribute your time to support the school (thank you!), please help us to demonstrate that we are meeting our goal by completing the very simple Volunteer Hours Form and returning it to the school office.

Committees: These include Accountability, Budget, Facilities, Gifted Advisory, and Fundraising. More information is available here. If you are interested in any of these committees, please contact the office and leave your name and contact information.

Problems: If you feel there is a problem in your child's classroom, please discuss this with your child's teacher. Problems often arise from a communication breakdown. Please see your child's teacher first.
If you feel that the problem has not been resolved, contact the administrator; you will need to make an appointment in the office. The administrator will work with the family and the teacher to find the best solution.

Appeals: The Governing Council is a policy-making body that ensures the school's smooth operation by hiring and empowering the most qualified staff and faculty available. The Council is normally not involved with the day-to-day operations of the school. If classroom problems cannot be resolved with either the teacher or the administrator, an appeal can be brought to the Governing Council. The most effective approach is to write a letter to the Governing Council in advance of a regular meeting. If personnel issues are to be discussed, it should be done in executive session, which is held as needed at the end of each Governing Council meeting. The Council president can explain the process to you if your appeal may require discussion in such a session.
