Governing Council Membership

Elections for the CVCS Governing Council are held each year on the first Tuesday in May. If you are interested in running for a position, you will need to submit a completed Letter of Intent (see below) at least two weeks before the election date. Elections for governing positions are open to all registered Socorro voters and CVCS parents/legal guardians.

November 17, 2008: The CVCS Governing Council currently has two parent-position vacancies due to resignations, with terms running through June 2010. For mid-term vacancies, applicants interested in filling the position must submit the same Letter of Intent to the Governing Council (letters may be mailed or brought to the school), which will vote on the selection. The new member will serve for the remainder of the original member's term.

General Rules for Governing Council candidates

Candidates and their immediate family members may not be employees or contractors of the school. Candidates for the parent positions must have at least one child enrolled at the school at the time of election and for the duration of the elected term. The terms will be for two years (one year for community member).

Candidates must complete a written Letter of Intent and answer the three questions in the Letter, which can be obtained from the school office or downloaded. Please note that your Letter of Intent is your campaign statement, and will be available for voters to read both before and on the day of the election/appointment.

Serving on the Governing Council is a privilege and responsibility that requires a level of personal and moral commitment. In addition to monthly Council meetings, there is a time commitment of at least two hours per week, with some Council members contributing more.

The following is a guideline designed to inform you of some of the responsibilities expected of Council members:

  • Read the entire charter to ensure that it is being followed;
  • Focus on the development of policies to achieve the goals of the charter;
  • Exercise all duties and responsibilities with integrity, spirit of cooperation, and with the school's best interest at heart;
  • Set as a priority attending all Council meetings, development workshops, and other educational venues that will improve your ability to govern;
  • Represent CVCS and the policies developed by the Council in a positive and supportive manner;
  • Be an ambassador in the community for CVCS;
  • Come to meetings prepared to discuss business;
  • Act as the liaison for at least one standing committee and be willing to serve on other committees as needed;
  • Support and attend special events relating to the school;
  • Actively participate in the development of activities.

Serving on the Governing Council is a commitment to the school that requires time and energy. It is yet another way that parents can become more involved in the school and contribute to its growth by creating a wonderful school for our children. You do not have to be an expert on charter schools or education; you will receive training and support from the other Council members. It's a great way to make a difference in your child's education.
